The Purpose of the Strategy-Driven Performance Coaching approach is to help athletes go back to their “Natural” state of well being and performance, … to who they truly are.
In our approach to sport psychology, Citius (Faster), Altius (Higher), and Fortius (Stronger) are created by becoming “Lighter” in a psychological sense, by becoming more of who you truly are.
As human beings, we all accumulate and “pack on” fears, compulsions, self-images, beliefs, strategies, etc. This accumulation of “baggage” slowly, but surely, makes you a different person to the one you truly are. It makes you more nervous, less confident, more reactive, etc. Look back at young children playing. They try, go for it with no holding back, …having plain fun. In brief they are FREE to “BE,” within their physical activities.
In terms of athletic performance, this “baggage” can either be Performance-Drivers or Performance-Drains—depending if it supports or prevents you from reaching your goals. These Performance-Drivers and Drains came from the people that surrounded you, your parents, teachers, siblings, friends, your past experiences, the environment and conditions you were raised in and currently living in, etc. The purpose of the Strategy-Driven Performance Coaching approach is to identify and permanently eliminate the Performance-Drains that are slowing you down in the reaching of your goals.
The less Performance-Drains are “acting” within you, the more you are who you truly are. This brings you closer to your original essence. This leads you to better be able to naturally perform without being derailed or slowed down by a Performance-Drain (compulsion, belief, emotion, fear, etc.)
Less is More
There are 2 main paths to creating athletic excellence through Performance Coaching:
- The BUILDING Path
- The FREEING Path
The Building Path aims at defining the “perfect” profile of an athlete for ultimate performance, and building the athlete to becoming this “ultimate athlete.” To get there, the athlete and his or her ego are developed and “conditioned” so that this “ultimate athlete persona” eventually becomes second nature.
These approaches definitely work and are widely used. They take a long time to take effect, and until they become second nature, they are very demanding on the athlete. They require constant psychological “monitoring” and reinforcement, which requires a lot of energy, energy that is then NOT available for the athlete’s athletic performance. Sadly, they also often lead athletes to use performance enhancing drugs, so that they can “keep up with” or “deliver on” the “ultimate athlete” image they have been developing and selling themselves and everyone else.
The Freeing Path, on the other hand, aims at identifying what’s in the way of the athlete’s natural ability to perform to his or her best, and literally “removing” these Performance-Drains (habits, patterns, strategies, beliefs, etc.). The identification and permanent removal of the athlete’s Performance-Drains, allows the athlete’s natural talent, and core essence, to emerge and express itself. This emergence and natural expression naturally generates performance. It naturally puts the athlete on a path to “Citius, Altius, and Fortius.”
Our Philosophy to what is conducive to better performance and to an integrated athlete is that “Less is More.” The clearer an athlete is, the better able he or she is to naturally perform.
Our approach is to identify the thought patterns, habits, compulsions, beliefs, self-images, etc. (also called Performance-Drains) that are preventing performance or making performance inconsistent. Through specialized and powerful methodologies, athletes systematically dismantle their unique Performance-Drains, and gradually go back to their true nature, …where performance and well being is a natural state.
