Hello friends of canoeing and kayaking....

Our team has just returned from Kenya, Africa and I wanted to send a brief report of the trip by video and photos we have gathered.

The team consisted of members of the WPSF International Development Team of:
Mariah Schuette- Denver, Colorado USA,
Emily Jackson- Rock Island, Tennessee USA
Sarah Dodge- Lafayette, Colorado USA
Marissa Dederer- Canmore, Canada
Roxana Razeghian- Esfahan, Iran
Katayoon Ashraf- Esfahan, Iran
Nic Borst- Boulder, Colorado USA,
Mark Staszko- Harrisburg, Pennsylvania USA
Tyler Hinton- Lafayette, Colorado USA
Alex Dodge- Lafayette, Colorado USA
Chris Wiegand- Lafayette, Colorado USA

This is not a full report, but within the next week we will have a full detailed report on the website as well a professional video documentary prepared by an outside source of our work in Kenya and around the world.

The camp had many focuses:

  • Extension of Paddle sport throughout Kenya (helped further develop a solid club program in Sagana, Kenya- included members from our group leaving boats, gear and funds to build the needed sites locally at the club level)
    • Starting a canoe class in Kenya (c2 and c1 that they never had prior and ended up managing to compete in the African Championships)
  • Assistance to the ICF Development Committee in the African Championships Olympic Qualifier with the ICF (course building, judging, etc..) as well collaboration with the lead ICF onsite instructor- Lionel Lafay of France for Development of the Kenyan Federation Team
  • Donations to the local school for supplies through donations made to the WPSF
  • River running and waterfalls (I think the highest descent of a C2 Slalom team over a 35’ drop)
  • Swimming Instruction for beginners (women)
  • Training (flat water and whitewater)
  • Racing
  • Tour central Kenya and Safari

As an independent NGO the WPSF (World Paddlesport Foundation) will continue to grow grassroots paddlesport collaboration programming to NOC’s throughout the world in hopes of spreading the knowledge of paddle sports and it’s positive physical, social and cultural possibilities. These programs focus on schools, women, youth and people of developing nations in Africa and the Middle East.

A special thanks to the following for their financial and/or logistic support, encouragement and partnerships to make possible these grassroots collaborations:

There will be additional reports of our work and efforts in Kenya as well full details of success of the Kenya clubs to come on future trips in the coming days.

Please continue to support our sponsors and International Foundations supporting these and many other opportunities for growing our sport of canoeing and kayaking.
