After a year of competing together with very little training, the two man whitewater canoe team of Chris Wiegand and Nic Borst
are shooting for a spot on the 2008 US Olympic Team. With only a little more than 800 days away from the US Team Selection , they decide they can manage to persevere and train full time to attempt this lifelong dream. Both athletes will put aside their lives to try and make this dream become reality.
Nic Borst, a one time youth athlete of Chris Wiegand and part of the original FRPA members, has since graduated from high school and is attending college to pursure a sports science degree. Borst, also a development level coach has assisted Chris in coaching athletes from across North America during FRPA's High Performance Development Camps throughout 2005. Borst a former and current kayak athlete has been a 3 time member of the USA Junior Wildwater Team and had qualified to compete in the 2004 Olympic Team Trials in Slalom Kayak. He had also been a member of the US Junior Slalom Team in C2 with FRPA member Tom Gray in 2003 .
Wiegand, a once elite distance runner has been an active Canoe racer and competed in the 2004 Olympic Trials as well. Wiegand who has been undergoing treatment for the last several years for serious medical problems, has finally been cleared to train full time by his doctors. Wiegand, who has been selected as the 2005 USA Canoe/Kayak Team Development Coach of the Year and the Positive Coaching Alliance National Youth Sports Coach of the Year is anxious to pursue his dreams of becoming the athlete that he works to create within the FRPA.
The Wiegand/Borst team has helped create one of the best Junior two-man canoes in the US, Nick Chanin of Denver and Tad Morin of Ft Collins, which are planning on chasing closely behind and poyentially becoming one of the teams to beat at the 2008 US Team Trials to represent the United States in Beijing.
With only 800 days to achieve top level conditioning and performances, the Olympic Hopefuls will surely have a difficult path in reaching their dreams of being the sole Two man Canoe to reprent the United States.
