FRPA Plays Host to US Slalom Team Trials Qualifier

During Whitewater Weekend

____________________________

For the first time since it's start, the FRPA has been awarded the US Slalom Team Trials Qualifier Race to be held in Golden, Colorado on Sunday, May 15th. The site of the race has been host to the Champion Whitewater Series,  two US Junior Olympic Championships and US Cup races in years past.

This is the first non- junior focused race the FRPA has hosted since the US Cup Whitewater races in July of 2002. Unfortunately, 2002 was the year of the fires and severe dry weather. this year will definately have more water as the mountain snowpack is well above 2002. Expect fun whitewater and great competition.

The FRPA and the newly restructured Front Range Slalom Committee has met several times to plan out our many improvements to timing and race structures. The Front Range has always been capable of hosting top level National and International races, but is now newly energized and organized.

As the final qualifier for the US Slalom Team Trials to be hosted in Durango on the Weekend of June 11-13 we hope to attract some of the countries top racers and former Olympians as they head towards Durango.

To kick off the extensive race month of May we will be hosting a clinic with Rebecca Giddens at our redesigned Golden Slalom Facility.

Beginning Friday, May 13th weekend, the Alexander Dawson Canoe and Kayak Team and the FRPA will host two days of Whitewater racing for the Colorado High School Whitewater Championships. This will also be the Rocky Mountain States Junior Olympic Qualifier.

The Format will be a wildwater sprint (about 1 mile) on Friday evening with more than 40 competitors expected.

On Saturday the 14th we expect more than 65 racers to compete for the Colorado High School Whitewater Championships Slalom Race and Freestyle.

The top high school paddlers shoot out for the overall "Rivermeister" award of the top all around high school paddlers in Colorado. The combined 4 high school events (Ice Breaker, Durango, CRMS-Carbondale and DSCKT events) will provide a total score for each student/athlete in Wildwater, Slalom and Freestyle. The highest score awards the top boys and girls participant in Colorado.

In years past, athletes from the Mid-west have participated as part of a Clinic week coached by Olympian, World Champion and 2004 Italian Olympic Team Coach, Cathy Hearn.
