Whitewater Weekend a Great Success!
It was a great weekend of whitewater racing during the 13th-15th of May. Racers from many states set their boats on the rising Clear Creek Whitewater Facility in Golden, Colorado, home of the FRPA. Quite a change for the norm that people from a far rain upon us instead of the FRPA traveling many miles to compete in any regional or National level race such as this weekend. More than 70 racers over the three days of racing competed in the Wildwater, Freetyle and Slalom competitions. The Colorado High School Championships and Junior Olympic Qualifiers for the Junior Classes competed on Saturday as well the senior classes competed for the Colorado Cup Points.
Friday started with the downriver races for the Colorado Cup and High School Whitewater Championships. Twenty three of Top Olympians through beginner whitewater kayakers charged down the 1 mile long whitewater course. Members from the 2004 USA Wildwater Team found the course very similar to the Vipetino Jr World Championship Course. The course was fairly swift, lined with rock to dodge and tight turns. Those able to navigate the turns and manage to keep the highest stroke rate took home the medals at the end of the day. Three-time whitewater slalom Olympian and World Cup Champion, Scott Shipley was here to test the downriver skills and attempt to de-thrown last years Champion of the World Famous Downriver Race at FibArk, Nic Borst of the FRPA. It appeared that Shipley had the better lines and the higher stroke rate. Shipley bested Borst by 9 seconds to take home the gold and Idaho's Tren Long back 32 seconds from the Gold.

On Saturday, the thermometer hit high in the 70's and clear Rocky Mountain skies, racers plummetted down the technical and long clourse. The theme..... dive and off-set. All skills were tested as down's were placed deep in eddies and tight offsets allowed even Olympic Alumni to have a tough time on eddy lines. It was Nic Borst taking the Colorado Cup Title for day one of two over 1996 Olympian, Ben Kvanli. Go FRPA! The Jo Qualifier and Coloradfo High School cup athletes came from far as California and Illinois to compete in the High School Cup/JO Qualifier. The Colorado High School Cup and the Front Range Races have started to attract athletes that do not have races as such in their state or region. It is great to see so many young athletes striving to make the USA Whitewater Slalom Junior National level races. Each year we hope to grow to new heights for all of our athletes.
Sunday's Slalom Team Trial Qualifier course was set to challenge all levels of athletes. A long off-set and very difficult course proved to separate the best. Olympians struggled to catch their breath at the close of the course for the last tight flush gate and hole jump for the deep upstream before the finish. It was great to see all the younger athletes find plan " B and C" to make the gates in the correct direction. Big boils and difficult sections of whitewater pushed the athletes into eddies and forced some to flip. In the end, smiles filled the sidelines as everyone walked away evenly challenged and new friendships were made amongst the distant and local whitewater crowd.
